Bonsai in Croatia - part 6

This is Carpinus orientalis. I had never seen this species before, but I fell in love with it immediately. I think this is the best carpinus species of them all. I cut back this shrub and wired it. It was explained that this is normal for first styling of a deciduous tree and that one cuts back much more than most people think to leave space for future growth. The result looks ugly as forseen. Here one can see why demonstrations on deciduous trees are almost never seen on big stages. The artist looks like a butcher and one cannot readily appreciate what he has done. It will only be seen five years later. Anyway, this is the professional way to treat such material. And then, what else should one show people who come from all over the country and are hungry for information. A demo is not about showing what a genious the demonstrator is. It is about teaching and bringing your audience to a new level with the kind of material that THEY will have to work with.

demo - the hornbeam.
